DID YOU KNOW

✊🏾This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first Black Friday? People used to call the Friday after Thanksgiving, “Black Friday,” because people shopped so much that store owners went from the red (in debt) to black (profit!) But 20 years ago, the U.S. Congress set aside the Friday after Thanksgiving to honor all the contributions that black people have made to America. They called that day Black Friday.

✊🏾Good Friday also used be called Black Friday because Jesus suffered and died on that day. But because with his Holy Blood, he saved us all from our sins, it became a fantastic day!

✊🏾We used to have a whole Black History Month. But then, Hispanics wanted an entire month; Native Americans wanted an entire month. I mean, there’s only 12 months, people! So leaders from around the country zoomed together and agreed that it was more special to have a day set aside to celebrate black people. On Black Friday, Americans can really focus on what black people mean to this country, just like they can focus on Christ at Christmas, the pilgrims on Thanksgiving and families on Triumph of the Family Day. And America already had a day named Black Friday, which must have seemed like a sign to our wise and benevolent leaders!

✊🏾Martin Luther King made a lot of speeches besides his “I Have a Dream Speech.” But for Black Friday, the only permitted speech for public use is the Standard Edited Version of his “I Have a Dream” speech.

✊🏾Mentioning slavery on Black Friday is considered offensive because the day is dedicated to all the amazing achievements of black people! If you want to honor Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, or Sojourner Truth, of course, you can talk about their “dedication to the liberation of their people.” But why not play it safe and talk about

  • the first black Billionaire, Robert Johnson
  • the first black commander of a U.S. Navy destroyer, Samuel Gravely
  • the first black CIA agent, Dan Freeman
  • the first black megachurch pastor, Carlton Pearson,
  • or J. Wilkins Jr., who worked on America’s very first nuclear bomb?

✊🏾The red, black, and green and the red, white, and blue candles we light on Black Friday symbolize the Pan-African and American flags. When we light them simultaneously, we celebrate how black and white people worked hard together in this country to make it a better place.

✊🏾Traditionally, we eat chicken wings, macaroni and cheese, seasoned greens, and sweet potato pie on Black Friday. Still, no one says you can’t mix it up! How about adding a splash of color with these 11-layer Jello treats? Or you could go the other route with these black candy apples. Forever President Carlson’s favorite is green bean casserole with cream of mushroom soup.

✊🏾Although some Americans sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” (aka “The Black National Anthem”) on Black Friday, a more appropriate choice is “This Little Light of Mine.” Both a hymn and a Civil Rights song, it proclaims how beautifully we all glow together in this great country.

It also warns of the dangers facing us when Satan whffs our lights out. If you hear someone talking about our leaders doing something wrong, and it makes you feel sad, that’s just like Satan whffing your light out! Black Friday is no time for people to be lying about America. A great way to observe the holiday is telling a responsible adult when you hear your peers or other adults talking as though they don’t believe America is the greatest country this world has ever seen.

And of course it’s a great idea on every holiday to sing “All Lives Matter in America.”

✊🏾 Fox’s Black Friday Fiesta began on the fifth anniversary of the first Black Friday. Newly-elected Forever President Carlson thought the day should have a visual spectacle like the White House Christmas-tree lighting, the 4th of July fireworks on the National Mall, and the Manifest Destiny Pageant on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at the start of White History Week. This year, fifty high school marching bands and drum corps will perform before some of the most talented black American performers take the stage.
